Understanding the Self | The Emergent Self

Greetings~

Last discussion we talked about the Spiritual aspects of the self which includes the topic of the Inner Soul, Connection with Nature, and Discovering Life's Meaning. We discuss that spirituality talks about the meaning and purpose that go beyond the physical realities of life, and is focused on the individual's connections to people, to nature, and sacredness and divinity thus, it is relational.

Today, we will elaborate on the Emergent Dimension of self that will tackle the topic of the Political Self and Digital Self, and this will be the last article for our blog series entitled "Understanding the Self."

The Political Self: Developing Active Citizenship

Would a person's traits and values impact his political self? If your answer is yes, then it is correct! Assertiveness is one of the traits that can influence a person's political self because being assertive means you can stand up for your own or other people's rights in a positive way. David McClelland believed that we have three psychological needs: Need for power, Need for affiliation and Need for achievement. The need for power explains that a person aims to be a leader because he/she can influence his/her subordinates, while the need for affiliation is pleasing for followers and want attention, and the need for achievement is a person's desire for significant accomplishment. In order for us to be a good leader, we need to have a high need for power and a low need for affiliation, because no leader serves for his/her own good. How can a person be an active citizen? Being an active citizen does not mean you oppose the government, yet it is a kind of fulfillment that you will serve as a voice for those people who could not speak for themselves. Being updated on the current news and participation in voting are examples of being an active citizen.

The Digital Self: Uncovering Digital Citizenship

Technology is now a part of a person's way of living because individuals are now dependent on the product of technology like the internet. The purpose of the internet is to make everything convenient however this good purpose can be manipulated by many. For some, social media is their "safe space" yet is it really safe on the internet? The answer is no because through the internet we can access everything, and anyone can view your information. Have you ever noticed that you always see advertisements that catch your interests? If yes, it is because we leave a digital footprint on every website we visit due to this, it is not safe to save our important information like passwords and personal bank account. In order for us to avoid being a victim of phishing or being scammed on the internet, we need to be attentive to the websites we are visiting and avoid typing our private information on untrustworthy websites. Also, in participating in group discussions, we must respect each other's viewpoints to avoid further conflicts.

This is the end of our discussion I hope this blog series achieved its goal to help you understand the importance of the self. Thank you for reading & supporting my blog!~
